Smith College Kathleen McCartney Hall and Brown University Brook Street Residence Halls receive Design Awards from AIA New England

October 7, 2026

AIA New England has recognized Smith College Kathleen McCartney Hall and Brown University Brook Street Residence Halls with 2026 Design Awards.

The Annual New England Architecture Awards celebrate architecture by New England architects anywhere in the world and architecture by other architects within the New England region. The design awards program recognizes design excellence of projects of all sizes, types, and budgets.

Kathleen McCartney Hall has received an Honor Award. McCartney Hall is a new, mass timber building that brings two existing centers together under one roof; the Lazarus Center for Career Development and the Wurtele Center for Leadership. By deliberately co-locating these two centers in a prominent location, the project aims to catalyze their mutually supporting endeavors, inviting students in to find their own voice and path, to articulate their leadership strengths as part of their career preparation.

Brook Street Residence Halls, the recipient of a Citation Award, provide an inviting residential community that will re‑shape Brown’s connection to its surrounding neighborhood. Driven by the University’s mission to increase undergraduate housing, this 125,500-square-foot project introduces 353 beds and an improved public pedestrian experience along an important north-south corridor in Providence’s East Side. The design utilizes a refined selection of brick, terracotta, and wood that honors the local architectural character.
