Type: Adaptive Reuse
Working with old buildings has been at the center of our practice for reasons both opportunistic and ideological. We see their renewal and reinterpretation as an active and intelligent act. To us, this reinvention is rich in possibility and stakes an optimistic claim on the future.
In conjunction with our colleagues at Atelier Ten, we have developed a white paper that speaks to extending the life of existing buildings and the substantive impact that improvements to their performance can have on tackling climate change. We describe how reimagined buildings—altered in form, purpose, and posture—can better respond to the ideals of the communities they serve. Adapting buildings for new futures, involving a nuanced dialogue between the past and present, can result in vividly layered spaces that are more engaging and deliberately accessible.
