Our goal in this interior design and architectural project was to juxtapose a significant contemporary art collection with a riff on a traditional interior, one more typical of Park Avenue than Chelsea. As a balance to the minimalist gallery spaces, the apartment’s herringbone wood floors, ornate fireplace, and flowing window treatments create a world that is about living with art rather than mere exhibition.

The apartment sits above newly-built and active commercial space and intentionally remains distinct from it in personality and tone. All the rooms, as well as the exterior spaces, were conceived as locations for ever-changing art installations.

Originally completed in 2007, we redesigned the interiors in 2016.

Works by artists such as Damien Hirst, Yoshitomo Nara, and Adam Helm provide surprises at every turn. The residence features a striking combination of the owner’s extensive contemporary art collection with an interior design more traditional than the austere modernism of the Gallery below.
